چکیده

Larvae of the sesarmid crab Armases angustipes Dana, 1852, captured from the coast of the state of São Paulo, Brazil, were reared in the laboratory from hatching to the megalopa stage. In this paper, the morphology of the four zoeal stages and the megalopa is described and illustrated. Morphological comparisons are made with all known descriptions for the larvae of Armases including an unpublished description of A. angustipes and of some closely related genera (Aratus and Sesarma). Several differences to the previous description of A. angustipes are shown, and additional characters such as the previously undescribed cephalothoracic setation of the larval stages are described and illustrated. Diagnostic characters are provided to differentiate the American genera Sesarma and

Larvae and first - stage juveniles of the American genus Armases Abele

Complete larval development and first crab stages of the sesarmid crabs Armases roberti (H. Milne Edwards, 1853) and A. ricordi (H. Milne Edwards, 1853) from Jamaica were obtained from laboratory culture. All larval stages (four zoeal stages and the megalopa) and the first juvenile crab stage of A. roberti are described and illustrated in detail for the first time, and a previous description of...

Patterns of larval and early juvenile growth in a semiterrestrial crab, Armases angustipes (Decapoda: Sesarmidae): comparison with a congener with abbreviated development

In a semiterrestrial and estuarine tropical crab, Armases angustipes Dana (Grapsoidea: Sesarmidae), changes in biomass (measured as dry mass, W; carbon, C; nitrogen,N; and hydrogen,H; per individual) and relative elemental composition (C, N, H, in percent of W; C:N mass ratio) were studied during development from an early egg stage through hatching, the complete larval phase, metamorphosis and ...

Complete larval and early juvenile development of the mangrove crab Perisesarma fasciatum (Crustacea: Brachyura: Sesarmidae) from Singapore, with a larval comparison of Parasesarma and Perisesarma

The complete larval development of the sesarmid crab Perisesarma fasciatum (Lanchester, 1900) from Singapore was obtained from laboratory culture. All four zoeal stages, the megalopa and the first crab stage are described and illustrated. The morphological characteristics of the larvae of P. fasciatum are compared with those of other known larvae of the genera Perisesarma and Parasesarma. The l...

Metamorphosis of a sesarmid river crab, Armases roberti: stimulation by adult odours versus inhibition by salinity stress

In an experimental laboratory study with the megalopa stage of Armases roberti, a freshwaterinhabiting species of crab from the Caribbean region, we evaluated the combined, potentially antagonistic effects of odours from conspecific adults and of stepwise salinity reductions (simulating upstream migration, reaching within 1 week conditions of 2ø or freshwater). Neither of these treatments affec...

Effects of reduced salinities on metamorphosis of a freshwater-tolerant sesarmid crab, Armases roberti: Is upstream migration in the megalopa stage constrained by increasing osmotic stress?

Numerous species of estuarine and freshwater-tolerant crabs show an “export strategy”, i.e. an early larval downstream transport towards coastal marine waters, later zoeal development at higher salinities, and a return of the last larval stage, the megalopa, into estuaries or rivers. The speed and extent of the upstreammigration of themegalopa through strong salinity gradientsmay be constrained...
